Stray Thoughts During Flu Quarantine

In August 2005, I finished reading The Fountainhead. That night, I ate dinner with my grandparents and told them about the spirit of man and how I aim to do something great with a single-minded vision, adversity and the views of others be damned. Two days later, I mouthed off to my dad and he grabbed me by the shirt and told me to “stop reading nazi garbage.” Imagine how insufferable I would’ve been if he didn’t do that!

Tim Cook was responsible for the introduction and decommissioning of the Lightning port and cable, which only stopped appearing in Apple products last year. As someone who just tossed a whole bunch of these cables, this might’ve been his biggest failure as the CEO: unnecessary proprietary ports that only made using devices harder and more cumbersome. (Not to mention the permissioning of human rights abuses and some pretty dark shit, but I really hated lightning.)

I tried to have a Freeway beard for the last month, but instead I ended up looking like every Hasidic guy in a Darren Aronofsky movie.

Being bisexual in 2026 is about as impressive as having a college degree. Being bisexual while getting your college degree is basically table stakes now.

I truly have no idea how I’ve gotten this far in life and only been punched in the face three times.

Strava is a cult — one I’m considering rejoining, mind you — and you can’t convince me otherwise.

The problem with most people online is they think they’re either Serpico or John Galt but they’re really Cliff Clavin.

I truly don’t understand why anyone of a privileged, educated background would knowingly use cocaine. The unchecked suffering that happens at every step of the supply chain means every single purchase (regardless of size) has a handful of deaths attached to it at the very least. Not to mention the destruction to crucial parts of the environment, ecosystems, and the like. I don’t mention this publicly much, but any time it is present at a party or gathering, I usually leave the room rather abruptly. I also do not allow it in my house. I do not look down on people who use it (as many friends do use it), but I find the logic around its recreational use confounding. (I have never willingly done the drug, though I once unwillingly and unknowingly smoked a joint laced with freebase cocaine 15 years ago. I don’t speak to the person who gave it to me anymore for more than just that reason.)

The next time you take public transit on a busy line, count the number of people not looking at their phone. I guarantee you it’ll be less than 10, more likely less than 5.

Judaism has been around for 5,786 years, but was there ever a period in there where folks were like “Actually, shit’s okay and we can worry less for a bit”?

Nevermind by Nirvana is a good album, but there are a million better records by grunge bands. Tiny Music is a personal favorite, along with the ’90s Soundgarden records, most Alice in Chains albums (especially and controversially the self-titled one), and Yield.

More shows should be 26 episodes. More shows should last for at least 10 seasons. Let the characters live. Let them fail. I want to know about secondary/tertiary characters and their quirks. The TV is a window to a different world you don’t usually ever get to experience, and closing it too soon limits the time one gets to escape.

More people should get popcorn from a movie theater and walk with it outside. It’s one of the most magical things you can do in this city.

It seems that the second fever I had during this flu is subsiding. Praised be Zicam.

I got a push notification from the NASA app telling me to look at a photo of the known universe, and that might be the most surreal thing to ever happen in my life thus far.

Finally, this is the best Monkees song by far, and also maybe the best psychedelic song of all time. It’s worth noting that Carole King wrote it.
